Step 1: Installing the Washing Machine

 

Calling a master is not your option? Then install the machine yourself. Consider these points:

 
  • To keep your washing machine running smoothly, place it in a dry, dust-free, shaded area. Heating appliances and the sun’s rays falling on the typewriter are its main enemies. Don’t forget about it.

  • To prevent the machine from failing ahead of time, make sure that the floor under it is perfectly flat, solid, without pits and slopes. During the spin cycle, the drum spins at up to 30 revolutions per second. Any unevenness will bring down the centering and increase the vibration at times. To avoid this, install the device using a level. If necessary, adjust the legs.

IMPORTANT: over time, alignment can go astray. The problem is especially relevant for small, narrow and light models. They are less stable by default. If the noise becomes more noticeable when the centrifuge is running, re-center the device. You can also use foot pads . They will dampen vibrations and reduce the noise level during washing. The same underlays are appropriate on slippery and/or expensive flooring (i.e. one that you are afraid of scratching).

 
 
 

Step #2: Choosing Filters

 

Caring for a washing machine involves a constant, ruthless fight against scale. It is formed due to hard water, harms heating elements and electromechanical valves. It’s easy to avoid pimples! To do this, you need to equip the water supply hose with a water treatment device. The filter will purify water from harmful impurities, salts, chlorine and pathogenic bacteria. And it will save you up to 30% electricity and up to 40% powder. This is because soft water is better at removing dirt.

 

Unfortunately, the filter resource is limited. After 400 wash cycles (on average) it will have to be replaced. In addition, you can experiment with filter types. At your service:

 
  • Coarse filter. Pre-filter made of mesh, polypropylene thread or foamed polymer. Mechanically captures particles up to 200 microns in size. Works great on rust and sand.

  • Magnetic filter. It purifies water due to the magnetic field that changes the crystal lattice of carbonates. After that, they do not settle on the parts of the washing machine. Such a filter will last a very long time, but, unfortunately, it will only protect against scale. It will not remove any biological or mechanical impurities.

  • polyphosphate filter. Flask with sodium polyphosphate, which dissolves in water, chemically softens it and envelops the parts of the washing machine. The same filter can be installed on the heating boiler.

  • Deep filter. Device for multi-stage water filtration. Challenges all kinds of impurities!

Step 3: Descale

 

Your washing machine is many years old, and all these years it has worked without a filter? Alas, sooner or later, the “insides” of the device will suffer from scale. Most active deposits are formed at temperatures above 60 °. The more often you wash things with hot water, the more carefully you need to take care of your washing machine. Improvised means will come to the rescue. You can:

 
  • Pour citric or tribasic carboxylic acid into the cleaning agent cuvette. Run a wash cycle at high temperatures. To find out how many grams of acid you need, multiply the capacity of the machine (how many kilograms of laundry you can load into it) by 25.

  • Pour a glass of 9% acetic acid into the powder compartment. Run a wash cycle with pre-soak and high temperature.

  • Pour a mixture of half a glass of water and half a glass of baking soda into a cuvette. Pour a glass of nine percent acetic acid into the drum. Run a wash cycle at high temperature.

As you can see, there are many ways. But experts advise not to get involved in caustic, and especially chlorine-containing substances. They can corrode the seals, the rubber cuff of the drum and even the silumin cross. In order not to damage some parts of the washing machine, cleaning others, you can use a special tool.

 
 
 

IMPORTANT: Descaler is not a panacea! If you use it often, the scale crust from the heating element will be more and more difficult to remove. To avoid this, try to get a filter and soften the water.

 
 
 

Step 4: Preparing the Laundry for Washing

 

To prolong the life of the device, use it correctly! Check clothing pockets for solid foreign objects in the drum. Do not overload the machine so that the bearings do not wear out prematurely. When placing clothes in the drum, make sure they are not caught in the door. Try not to wash shabby, decaying, as well as fleecy things (sweaters, blankets, bedding). And if washing still cannot be avoided, place them in a special bag.

 
 
 

Step #5: Selecting detergents

 

The right detergent is a guarantee that the machine will serve you faithfully! So, only the composition labeled “Automat” is suitable for an automatic machine .

 
 
 
  • Powder is the affordable, tough, and least delicate option. Will show itself effectively if you wash only in hot water. Alas, such a tool cannot be called a full-fledged one. Most likely, you will need to use additional conditioner to soften the clothes.

  • Liquids and gels show excellent results at low water temperatures. A liquid product will cost more than a powder. But with it you do not have to use air conditioning.

  • Capsules are an excellent choice if you are washing with a maximum drum load. The tool is expensive and, unlike powder and gel, is not dosed. Spending a whole capsule on small “washing” is unprofitable. But it will cope even with the most serious pollution.

There are other tools that help to solve problems pointwise. For example, tablets with a high content of active substances, bleaches and stain removers, conditioners and rinses.

 
 
 

IMPORTANT: whatever remedy you choose, do not overdo it! Excess washing powder will only complicate the care of the washing machine. The excess remains in the cuvette and sticks together into a hard crust. It will have to be soaked and removed. In addition, excess product will not be rinsed out during washing and may remain on clothes.

 
 
 

Step number 6: choosing a washing program

 

Modern machines have dozens, if not hundreds, of preset modes. Some of them (for example, the “service wash” or “eco-cleaning” mode in Samsung devices) take washing machine care to a new level. With their help, you can get rid of the unpleasant smell and avoid the appearance of mold.

 

In addition, different patterns of movement of the drum will make washing as efficient as possible, while not damaging clothes. Smart washing machines go one step further and offer mobile diagnostics. An example is Smart Diagnosis in LG cars. With the help of such a program, the machine itself will be able to find malfunctions and analyze malfunctions.

 
 
 

Step #7: Caring for your washing machine immediately after a wash cycle

 

Laundry finished? The first thing to do is to extract things. Experts advise not to leave laundry in the machine even for a couple of hours. Moisture and lack of air circulation are ideal conditions for mold and mildew to thrive. After freeing the machine, clean the folds of the seal. Remove hair, fibers, cat hair from the rubber. Wipe the cuff with a clean, dry cloth.

 

When finished cleaning, leave the door open. Without proper drying, an unpleasant odor will quickly develop in the drum. After making sure that the “insides” of the machine are dry, you can close it. If the smell still appears, use a product to remove it.

 
 
 

Step 8: Cleaning the Washing Machine

 

Careful care of the washing machine is not only drying after each wash cycle, but also a “general cleaning” every few months. What is needed for this? Stock up on a sponge, soapy water and patience!

 

You will:

 
  • Clean the body of the washing machine. Wipe the outside of the device with a soft sponge to get rid of dust and fingerprints. Use soapy water or an alcohol-free cleaner.

  • Clean drum. We use the same weak soap solution. No alcohols, solvents or chlorine! Ideally, you should not clean the drum manually, but using the preventive wash mode (see above). Alternatively, you can use a little powder and the “Cotton” mode. We set the temperature to the maximum.

  • Empty the detergent container. If the cuvette is clogged, remove it and rinse with warm water using a sponge or an old toothbrush.

  • Clean the inlet filter. We wash the removable mesh elements under running water. Fixed – we process with a cotton swab.

  • Clean the filter in the drain system. The procedure is necessary if the machine began to slowly drain water, or make suspicious sounds at the same time. Locate the filter cover at the bottom of the device and place a rag on it so that the floor is not flooded. Unscrew the cap and drain the remaining water. Pull out the filter, shake it out and rinse under the tap. Dry. Clean the hole in the washing machine with a sponge. Insert the filter back and screw on the cap.

Step #9: Troubleshooting

 

No matter how you take care of your washing machine, sooner or later you will run into problems! Some of them require the intervention of a master. Some you can fix yourself. The main thing is to purchase the necessary spare parts.

 
  • Hose for water supply. Slipping or cracking of the water hose is a fairly common problem. Regularly check the hose for integrity. If it detaches, turn off the power immediately. After that, you can start solving the problem.

  • Transport bolts. If the machine was not installed by a master, the cause of unnecessary vibrations and “jumps” may be forgotten shipping bolts. Normally, they fix the drum during transportation. After installing the washing machine, it is MANDATORY to unscrew them. If this is not done, the drum will be able to rotate, but the machine will behave as if it was installed out of level.

  • shock absorber. An important element on which the performance of the machine directly depends. If the device was installed incorrectly, it is the shock absorbers that will wear out first. The same fate awaits them if you often overload the tank. A separate risk factor is power outages. If the drum was rotated at high speeds and was abruptly stopped, the shock absorbers may fail.
