Nitric Oxide supplements: do they really work?

Stethoscope with the words "Nitric Oxide"

What do your brain, your gut, your heart, your cardiovascular system, your sexual health, and your immune system all have in common???

They all need– and depend upon– Nitric Oxide to work at peak performance!

In 1998, three scientists won the Nobel Prize in medicine for the discovery of the Nitric Oxide molecule.

“The discovery of Nitric Oxide and its functions one of the most important in the history of cardiovascular medicine.”– Dr. Valentin Fuster

“The fact that cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the #1 killer of men and women worldwide is simply unacceptable given that we know unequivocally what causes CVD… the loss of nitric oxide production.”– Dr. Nathan S. Bryan

There are many supplements on the market that claim to aid in nitric oxide production, including L-arginine and L-citrulline. The problem with taking some of these supplements is that they are dependent upon an enzyme that becomes more and more dysfunctional as we age. This means that those supplements aren’t able to overcome the dysfunctional enzyme system and aren’t the best strategy to improve our Nitric Oxide levels. They won’t fix the Nitric Oxide problem. L-arginine and L-citrulline work less and less the older we get, because this enzyme system becomes more and more dysfunctional as we age. We need a product that will more directly produce Nitric Oxide and that isn’t dependent on that dysfunctional enzyme system.

As a pharmacist, I know that all supplements aren’t the same, but this might come as a surprise to you. Supplements and vitamins are not regulated by the FDA like drugs are. So how do you know if a nitric oxide supplement is a true Nitric Oxide product that actually works???

I will list 4 questions here that I found at the listed reference below…

1. Does the supplement have any published clinical trials in humans? Clinical trials are expensive and risky so you must have confidence that your product works. Very few companies actually put their product to the ultimate test in clinical trials.

2. Does the product have any issued patents? Innovation and product superiority can be distinguished by issued patents.

3. Is the technology licensed from a reputable University or Medical School? This will ensure there was actually research and some intellectual property on the product or product technology. Any company or doctor can put ingredients together but it does not mean there is science or any valid research to back it.

4. Has the formulator or scientists behind the product ever published in the nitric oxide literature? The field of nitric oxide is very complicated and complex biochemistry. This requires expertise to know how to deliver bioactive Nitric Oxide in humans.

Over two months ago, my family and I personally started taking a Nitric Oxide supplement that I learned about several months ago when I was together on a podcast with Dr. Nathan Bryan (his website is referenced below). I have been practicing pharmacy for over 20 years, and I was blown away by what I learned about Nitric Oxide from reading the information on his website. All of it makes so much sense and is backed by great clinical literature and studies.

The supplement we use is made by Berkeley Life, and it meets all of the criteria (4 questions) mentioned above.

I am difficult to impress, but I am impressed! The supplements are even proven to work– you can order a test strip kit with your supplements. You can test your Nitric Oxide level before taking the supplement, and then afterwards, and observe the difference! You just cannot find many supplements that will PROVE to you that they’re working! It’s amazing.

A very brief (1-minute) YouTube video explains how this Nitric Oxide supplement works:

I can say personally that I feel great since starting the supplement. I have also noticed a positive difference in my energy level!

Berkeley Life feels strongly that their supplements are best recommended and evaluated by healthcare professionals for their patients. If you are interested in a Nitric Oxide supplement that works and that is backed by evidence, you can order the supplements (as well as the Nitric Oxide test strips– which aren’t required in order to take the supplements, but are a cool feature) using my affiliate link here:

I’d love to hear your thoughts or answer any questions you might have about Nitric Oxide, or about my role as a pharmacogenomics consultant! I can personalize your medications using DNA technology! Ask me how!
