As a person that owns a small social media site, I am a big supporter of free speech and understand the responsibility of providing a platform for people to share their thoughts.

Every social media platform is going to have something stupid or hateful on it. That is what people share. However, it’s up to those websites to limit things that lead to riots and other crimes.

I would like to see a level playing field in this regard. A person in the US should be held to the same international standard as someone in Iran or China. 
If countries don’t limit the hate they spread, then it’s up to the hosting companies to do so, because many acts of terrorism are products of social media chatter.

There are countries that actively hack everyone while limiting what their citizens can see. We shouldn’t hack them back, but we can prevent them from accessing our servers.
In short, we have to promote free speech and protect the people of the world from those that just want to see burn. We have to provide everyone we can a platform while making sure they don’t abuse to harm others.
It’s not an easy dilemma, but it’s one that I’m sure we will figure out as a society. When we do come up with a fair internet that does accurately protect people, the world will change for the better in ways we can never imagine.

We have all the information and power of the world at our fingertips. The good, the bad, and the ugly all have that power. We must, as a species, work to do better.
