• Many people apply for federal jobs and may not receive an update on their application when they believe they should.

Some wait it out, hoping to hear from someone, while others are looking for answers but can’t find any.

Well, the good news is that I’m here to help.

According to USAJOBS, the timeline for receiving an interview invitation or rejection for a federal vacancy varies.

Many agencies that list their openings on USAJOBS, for example, have a goal to complete the process, from the announcement closing date to the job offer date, within a month and a half.

While they may be assessed on their adherence to this goal, they are not legally bound to it, nor are applicants given any rights if the timeline exceeds this goal.

Also, please note that in many cases, it can take much longer than the target timeline you see here. A number of factors can contribute to this, which I will not dive into in this post.

All in all, instead of pulling your hair out wondering what is going on, I, along with the folks at the OPM, recommend that applicants keep in touch with the vacancy’s point of contact to stay updated on their application status.

Contact details for the vacancy’s point of contact can be found in vacancy announcements on USAJOBS.

Please note that several factors go into this subject matter, and a social media post is just a spoonful of an entire feast.
